Don’t Walk Alone

When we were preparing for our move from Colorado back to the Midwest, there was one resounding prayer moving in my heart: “God, please lead me to a group of Christian friends.” I recently learned I was pregnant and my heart yearned for Christian mom friends. Why does it feel so hard to make friends as an adult? God wants to bless us with friends and people; the Bible describes the importance of fellowship throughout Scripture.

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers.” Acts 2:42 (HCSB)

“And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works, not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24–25 (HCSB)

“How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” Psalm 133:1 (HCSB)

A Godly community encourages, unites, loves, serves, corrects, and sharpens one another. It really is that important. Maybe you are also finding yourself in a period of isolation or wishing for a solid group of friends. Can I remind you that the enemy would love for you to remain isolated? This is one of his deceitful strategies. When we isolate ourself in the comforts of familiarity for too long, we can dull our spiritual edge. We become vulnerable to discouragement, doubts, and spiritual attacks. We also lose the chance to share our God-given gifts with others.

Wouldn’t it be nice for a wonderful group of friends to break down our door and find us in our living room? Sadly, that cannot be. We have to take an active step of faith and, with God’s guidance, seek opportunities to connect with others.

God answered my prayers. In our new town, I was led to a Momco group (information below!) and was placed in a group of about ten women. In all honesty, I missed the first half of the sessions. I am so susceptible to getting too comfortable at home with a solitude that quickly turns into painful isolation. The enemy will often whisper a tempting reason for you not to go to church, the small group event, or the Bible study.

That first Momco meeting brought so many blessings. I gained valuable insights from the moms, from both peers and the two mentor moms who are full of wisdom to share. I promptly went out and purchased a notebook, collected some pens, and titled it “Momco Glimmers.” There was much to learn from this community. I even discovered that one of the moms lived right down the street, leading to my first playdate with my son.

Answered prayers.

Don’t wait. Don’t walk alone. Surely, it is not always easy to find our people. We have to break free from the comforts of what we know and step out. Be encouraged, be sharpened in your faith, but also share the gifts God has given you. You are an important member of your community, and the Body of Christ needs you too.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)
