When Jesus Marveled

This week, I am sharing a beautiful and challenging sermon from Christine Caine that struck a chord with me recently.

Some takeaways:

  • Jesus marveled at the faith of people twice in the Bible. One instance was His amazement at the extraordinary faith of an unnamed Gentile centurion in Luke 7. The other was His amazement at the unbelief of those in His hometown, as recorded in Mark 6. The centurion heard of His authority, and he fully believed in Jesus’ power to heal his servant. In contrast, those who knew Jesus responded with doubt, offense, and a deep lack of faith. According to Christine, familiarity with Jesus can sometimes breed unbelief or laziness in our faith.

  • How would Jesus react to our faith? Are we striving to amaze others or seeking to amaze God?

  • Christine challenges listeners to take bold steps of faith. Faith does not often look sophisticated, if ever. We have to be okay with looking foolish for our faith. Christine highlights biblical examples of people who stepped out in faith despite looking foolish to those around them, such as Noah building an ark with no rain. Yet, with faith and obedience to God, they fulfilled God’s calling on their lives.
