A Word of Caution
There has been one particular conversation topic I have had come up again and again. It’s been on my mind a lot, too. It’s the rise of AI.
Artificial intelligence, described by IBM as: “Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy.”
Maybe you have heard about ChatGPT or Claude. Your doctor’s office is likely using some form of an AI Scribe. AI is all around us.
Here is how I often think of it, many things used in excess can bring harm. If we eat a doughnut as a special treat one day, that’s great! If you eat a whole box of doughnuts, you’re going to be sick. You can use AI to fix the grammar of your sentence, but you can’t use it to write your whole essay. Industries may utilize AI to optimize processes and workflows, but it should not be replacing roles and professions. It can quickly become too much.
One of my biggest concerns when it comes to our faith is this: are some people using AI as a replacement for the Holy Spirit?
Some people turn to ChatGPT like Google. When we ask ChatGPT questions instead of first turning to the Lord, things fall apart. God generously grants us wisdom when we ask Him to do so (James 1:5), and we need to turn to Him first.
At the end of the day, where is ChatGPT sourcing its responses from? Are these sources reliable? Can we trust that we are receiving wise counsel, even as these AI chatbots are created to mimic human-like, conversational responses?
Pause.
When it comes to use of AI, I suggest we use it with caution. It is not reasonable to say one should completely avoid AI, and I don’t think you need to. For example, I use AI to assist with edits and grammar for writing, but I do not use AI for learning about Scripture or Jesus. Do I trust that it will summarize a Bible verse correctly? No. I have trusted people to ask, will look to reliable commentary, and I will sit with God and ask Him for that wisdom.
As AI continues to develop and become a part of everyday life, boundaries are necessary. As I said, AI does not have a place in my walk with the Lord, and I advise you to use caution as well. AI should never be a replacement for the Holy Spirit, friends. Never.
God, thank You for Your guidance as the world around us continuously changes. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path” Psalm 119:105 (CSB).
